Tulane Baseball Comes Up Just Short in Baton Rouge
Mar 15, 2022 | Baseball
BATON ROUGE – The Tulane University baseball team (10-7) suffered a 7-5 loss to No. 13 LSU (14-3) on Tuesday evening inside Alex Box Stadium.
Â
The Green Wave battled back to make it a one-run game in the eight after cutting down a four-run deficit but was unable to complete the comeback.
Â
"We are getting too much air in the bat," head coach Travis Jewett said. "But we were engaged from the first out to the last, which we never were over the weekend. If we keep doing that, we have a chance to start feeling better."Â
Â
Grad-transfer Carter Robinson started for the Green Wave and allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits over 3.2 innings while striking out three.Â
Â
The Wave took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to an RBI-double by freshman Gavin Schulz and an RBI-single by redshirt junior Jared Hart.
Â
LSU tied the game in the bottom of the third with two runs of its own before taking a 5-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Redshirt junior Lane Thomas relieved Robinson in the fourth and went four innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven Tigers. The runs Thomas allowed were his first of the season over 9.2 innings of work.
Â
"I felt good," Thomas said. "I just went up there and let my defense work behind me. I was confident in every pitch of mine."
Â
Thomas found himself in a bases-loaded no-outs jam in the bottom of the sixth. Thomas then struck out a batter, allowed a sacrifice fly, and struck out .406 hitter Dylan Crews to escape the inning and limit the damage.Â
Â
The Wave got a rally going in the top of the seventh when Hart singled, and Trevor Minder doubled to put runners on first and second with one out. Ethan Groff went down on strikes before Brady Hebert lifted a fly ball to left field that was misplayed by the defense. Hart and Minder both crossed the plate to make it a two-run ballgame. With Hebert on second, Bennett Lee came within a few feet of tying the game when he launched a fly ball that was caught on the warning track in center field.
Â
In the top of the eighth, Tulane got something going again. Luis Aviles doubled to right and Schulz singled, his second hit of the game, to put runners on the corners with one out. Aviles then scored on a wild pitch to reduce the deficit to one run at 6-5. Schulz advanced to third on another wild pitch before he was thrown out at home after tagging up on a Simon Baumgardt fly ball.Â
Â
The Tigers added a run in the top of the ninth, but had a runner cut down at home for the third out of the inning, preventing the lead from growing to more than two runs.Â
Â
In the bottom of the ninth, Hart drew a leadoff walk, his fourth time getting on base in the game, but the Wave was not able to complete the comeback.
