FINAL STATS
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane third baseman Simon Baumgardt homered and starter Dylan Carmouche stymied visiting Memphis on the mound as the Green Wave won 5-2 in the American Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
Â
The Olive and Blue is now 7-19 on the season, while the Tigers dropped to 14-12.
Â
Carmouche (1-5) allowed just two unearned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. Relievers Michael Fowler and Michael Lombardi followed with clean eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with the latter picking up his third save. Fowler struck out the side in his frame, hurling 12 strikes in 19 pitches.
Â
Memphis starter David Warren (2-2) took the loss, as he gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six and one-third innings.
Â
Baumgardt went 2-for-3 at the plate for Tulane, which included a solo shot to center in the second inning. It was his fifth round-tripper, which tied him for the team lead with Jackson Linn.
Â
Second baseman Anthony Hansen and third baseman Logan Kohler each had a pair of hits for the Tigers.
Â
After Baumgardt's fireworks, Tulane grabbed a 2-1 lead when shortstop Gavin Schulz scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning.
Â
Schulz then scored first baseman Brady Marget with an RBI groundout in the fourth.Â
Â
In the fifth, Tulane went up 4-1 when second baseman Chase Engelhard scored on a passed ball.
Â
Both teams traded runs in the seventh, with the Green Wave getting on the board via an RBI single by catcher Brennan Lambert that scored center fielder Teo Banks. Tulane left fielder Tracy Mitchem came up with a big play in the top half as he and Schulz threw out Hansen at home trying to score on Kohler's double to limit the Tigers to just that one tally.
Â
Tulane designated hitter Brady Hebert's double to right gave him six for the season and tied him for tops in that category with Lambert.
Â
The two teams are back at it for the second game of the series Saturday at 6 p.m.Â
