Wave Cruises over UCF with Run Rule Victory
May 6, 2023 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane scored 11 of its 13 runs in the fourth and fifth innings, while starter Ricky Castro was again solid on the mound as the Green Wave notched a 13-2 Saturday victory on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The game was shortened to seven innings due to the ten run rule.
Â
The Green Wave improved to 14-33 and 7-10 in the American Athletic Conference. UCF dipped to 26-26 and 7-10 in the league.
Â
Castro (4-5) got the win, allowing just two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over six innings.
Â
Dom Stagliano (4-3) suffered the loss for the Knights, giving up five runs (four earned) with six hits and two strikeouts. Of the 13 runs allowed by UCF on Saturday, just five were earned.
Â
All of Tulane's starters recorded a hit on the evening, with left fielder Brady Hebert going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Â
UCF designated hitter Andrew Sundean had a solo homer for the visitors in the third.
Â
The Green Wave got on the board first with two runs in the second inning. Right fielder Jacob LaPrairie scored the first on a UCF throwing error and catcher Seth Beckstead came home for the second on Hebert's sacrifice fly.
Â
The Knights tied the game at 2-apiece in the top of the fourth, only to see the Green Wave respond with four in the bottom half. Run-scoring singles by Hebert and first baseman Brady Marget accounted for the first two and designated hitter Brennan Lambert tacked on a two-run base knock.
Â
The floodgates fully opened in the seventh as Tulane put the game away with seven runs. Hebert sent the first across with another hit to center, while the parade of two-run singles continued, courtesy of third baseman Simon Baumgardt, LaPrairie and second baseman James Agabedis. The seven runs were the most that Tulane has scored in any one inning in 2023.
Â
Green Wave reliever Grant Cleavinger came on for the seventh inning and shut down the visitors with two strikeouts.
Â
All 10 of Tulane's hits were singles. The 13 runs are the most for the program in league play this season.
Â
Saturday's win also marked the sixth consecutive league series that has seen Tulane and its opponent split the first two games.
Â
The deciding game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
