Quiroga, Roadrunners Complete Sweep of Wave
Mar 30, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – UTSA starter Ulises Quiroga allowed just two runs over seven innings and had considerable run support as he led the Roadrunners to a 12-6 victory over host Tulane Saturday afternoon on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The win gave the visitors a sweep of the series and improved their record to 16-12 overall and 5-1 in the American Athletic Conference. Tulane fell to 15-13 and 2-4 in the league.
Â
Quiroga surrendered just four hits and three walks with five strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Â
Tulane reliever Billy Price suffered his first loss (2-1), allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks in one and two-thirds innings. The Green Wave used seven total pitchers during the contest.
Â
UTSA's Mason Lytle went 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI and two runs scored. His biggest contribution was a three-run homer to left in the fourth inning that gave the Roadrunners a 4-2 lead. Third baseman Hector Rodriguez drove in three runs on a 3-for-5 day, two of which came on a two-run double to right to give UTSA a 10-2 lead in the seventh. Left fielder Caleb Hill, right fielder Tye Odom and catcher Broc Parmer also scored twice.
Â
For Tulane, third baseman Gavin Schulz continues to hit. He posted a 2-for-4 day, including a run-scoring double in the third inning, which was his team-leading ninth of the season. Second baseman Connor Rasmussen and pinch hitter Nathan Rose also had RBI singles to go with the Green Wave's biggest blow of the day. That came off the bat of pinch hitter Reed Kellum, who launched a three-run, opposite field bomb to right field in the bottom of the ninth to account for the game's final margin. The round-tripper was his first in a Tulane uniform.
Â
Green Wave catcher Colin Tuft singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and his on-base stretch to 20 consecutive contests.
Â
UTSA used just three pitchers throughout the three-games series.
Â
The Green Wave is back in action Tuesday when Texas Southern visits for a 6:30 p.m. game on Tuesday. The Tigers are 8-17 this season after thwarting a Grambling sweep with a 15-13 walkoff victory on Saturday.
