Monstrous First Inning Fuels Run-Rule Victory for Wave
Apr 2, 2024 | Baseball
Tulane improved to 16-13 overall, while the Tigers fell to 8-18.
The home team saw 11 consecutive batters reach in the first inning en route to 10 runs. Haas had an RBI double in the second, a two-run bomb in the sixth and plated the team's final tally with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth.
The other Tulane homer came off the bat of Teo Banks, a towering three-run shot in the fourth inning. In all, Colin Tuft, Banks, first baseman Adam Ebling, left fielder Jackson Linn, Haas and shortstop James Agabedis III all posted two hits apiece.
Shortstop Jaden Jones went 2-for-3 for Texas Southern. Second baseman Shannon Martin drove in the team's lone run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second.
The Green Wave used seven pitchers, with starter Michael Lombardi (2-2) credited with the victory after surrendering just one walk in the first inning.
Texas Southern starter (0-2) James Malone took the defeat, failing to record an out. He was tagged for seven runs on five hits with no strikeouts and two walks. The visitors used five pitchers.
Tuft extended his team-leading stretch of 21 straight games reaching base and now also boasts a 13-game hitting streak.
Tulane also had two triples in the same game for the second time this season (March 8 at ULL).
The Banks homer was his team-leading seventh of the season.
Tuesday's game reminded many of the 2020 matchup between the two schools. On March 3 of that season, the Green Wave scored 11 runs in the first inning and cruised to an 18-2 victory in a contest that also fell victim to the 10-run rule in seven frames.
The Green Wave heads for Birmingham this weekend when it faces UAB (12-15, 1-5) for a three-game series set to start Friday at 5 p.m.
