Tulane Dominates South Florida in Series Opener

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane got five runs in the first two innings Friday and never looked back as it secured a convincing 11-3 win over visiting South Florida on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The Green Wave improved to 19-15 overall and 4-6 in the American Athletics Conference, while the Bulls dropped to 20-14 and 6-4 in the league.

Tulane second baseman Connor Rasmussen and center fielder Teo Banks drove in two runs apiece, while Rasmussen, first baseman Brady Marget and right fielder Matthias Haas each had two hits. Catcher Colin Tuft, Rasmussen and third baseman Michael Lombardi all scored twice.

USF designated hitter Rafael Betancourt went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Left fielder Marcus Brodil drove in two runs with a two-run single in the seventh.

Green Wave starter Luc Fladda (1-2) had an excellent outing for the home team, allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work. Reliever Carter Benbrook yielded just two hits with three strikeouts in the eighth and ninth frames.

South Florida starter Hunter Mink (3-4) was hit pretty hard by Tulane, giving up six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks in four innings. In all, the visitors used six pitchers to get through the game.

Friday's game snapped Tulane's nine-game home run streak, but Tuft's on-base (26 games) and hitting streaks (18) stayed intact.Â

The Bulls were besieged by 13 walks and four hit batters Friday after allowing just five walks over its previous four contests.Â

Banks' two-run single in the second inning gave him 26 RBI on the season, tying him with Gavin Schulz for the team lead.

Tulane stranded 15 runners compared to five by South Florida.
Â
With the victory, the Green Wave improved to 13-1 this season when leading after five innings.

The second game of the series will by Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
