Volleyball Splits Two-Match Opening Day
Aug 31, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
ALBUQUERQUE – Tulane Volleyball made its 2024 season debut today at the Lobo Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico. A pair of competitive matches against New Mexico and UC Irvine put the Green Wave to the test, but the team was ultimately able to find their footing. Â
UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO
Tulane played New Mexico for their first match of the year, and while they were unable to come out on top, the game provided the Green Wave an opportunity to readjust.Â
Tulane started their efforts off strong, winning both the first point of the match and eventually the first set. While the Green Wave ultimately fell during the second set, the last several points of the game proved to be a battle of attrition. Tulane fought New Mexico off during several match points and put the game into extra scoring. Â
The third and fourth sets were both close, with the Green Wave making it to the end of both sets, the final score being 25-23 in both of them.
Agata Beksha led the team in hitting percentage, ending the match with a .400, 0 errors, and 10 kills. Sami Jacobs raked in the most kills for Tulane, with 17, and scooped 17 digs for the defense. Annabelle He also anchored the defense, providing 18 digs.
UC IRVINE
The battle against Irvine lasted the whole five sets, with Tulane falling in the first set but emerging triumphant in the second, third, and fifth sets to win the match overall.Â
Sami Jacobs was a standout leader in points earned for the Green Wave against the Anteaters, totaling 20.5 points with 16 digs and 16 kills. Jordan White followed in totals with 11.5 points and 7 block assists.
Sabrina Skyers provided seven kills, while Zoe Rachow also had a productive day, totaling 53 assists throughout the day.Â
Freshman Amelia Haggins had a standout match against Irvine, stepping up during her first day of collegiate gameplay. She played all five sets and secured six kills and two block assists. Freshman Juliet Galla also wasted no time proving herself, delivering four aces against Irvine, the most of anyone on the team throughout both matches.Â
