Wave Goes Down on the Road to Rice

HOUSTON, Texas – Tulane volleyball (9-12, 1-9) suffered a 1-3 defeat on the road Sunday afternoon to Rice (13-8, 9-1) inside the Tudor Fieldhouse.
The loss marked eighth consecutive defeat for the Green Wave and dropped the team to 1-5 on the road this season including 0-5 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Owls earned their ninth-straight victory and improved to 8-4 at home including 5-1 against league opponents.
Recording her 19th match this season with double-digit kills Avery Burks led the offensive attack for the Wave against the Owls. Burks finished the match with a team-high 16 kills to go with 12 digs which marked her 13th double-double performance of the season. Lauryn Mack and Sabrina Skyers were the next top performers on offense for Tulane each tallying eight kills.
Once again Zoe Rachow set up the offense for the Green Wave as she dished out 33 assists while adding 14 digs. The performance marked her second consecutive match with at least 30 assists and ninth this season.
Defensively, Dayla Ortiz recorded a career-high with 25 digs while adding five assists on Sunday. Her performance marks the fifth time this season she has posted at least 20 digs in a match.
Tulane faced an early deficit against the Owls eventually staring down a 12-16 deficit in the first set. The Wave mounted a 5-1 run to briefly tie the set 17-17 before the two teams met in a tie two more times at 19-19 and 20-20. It was the Green Wave that made the final push in the set to take the initial advantage in the match with 25-22 win.
The Wave put the first point on the board in the second set, but the Owls answered quickly to flip the momentum of the match. Tulane was unable to answer the furious attack by Rice eventually dropping the second set 11-25.
The Owls continued to put the pressure on the Green Wave in the third set as Tulane fell behind in the match 1-2 losing the set 12-25.
After Rice scored the first five points of the fourth set the Wave tried to battle back pulling within three points at 7-10. However, Tulane was unable to get any closer the remainder of the set ultimately falling 16-25 to drop the match 1-3.
UP NEXT
The Green Wave will return home to host UTSA and UAB in Uptown on Friday, October 31, and Sunday, November 2. The match between the Green Wave and the Roadrunners is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday while the rematch with the Blazers is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
