Tulane Takes Down Florida Atlantic in Uptown

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane volleyball (11-13, 3-10) closed it campaign inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse this season with a 3-1 victory over Florida Atlantic (17-9, 8-5) on Friday night. The Green Wave dominated the match at the net recording a season-high 18 blocks and limiting the Owls to a .110 hitting percentage.
With the win, the Wave improved to 9-5 at home on the season including a 3-5 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, Florida Atlantic dropped to 4-5 on the road with a 4-3 record against league opponents.
Junior Avery Burks led the offensive attack for Tulane tallying 21 kills on the evening. The performance marked her 22nd match this season with double-digit kills and her ninth with at least 20 kills. The offense was largely set up by Zoe Rachow who finished the match with 39 assist to go with four kills.
The defense at the net shined for the Green Wave throughout the entire match. Six different players recorded at least one block led by Fatima Samb who posted eight total blocks with a career-high seven solo blocks. Sabrina Skyers followed with four total blocks while Rachow added three and Burks and Ava Derbes each tallied two.
On the backend of the defense for Tulane Dayla Ortiz was the anchor with a match-high 21 digs. Annabelle He was second on the tea with 14 digs followed by Lilly Wedman with 13 and Rachow with 12.
The Green Wave opened with a strong start against the Owls leading from start to finish to win the first set 25-17. Tulane had to battle in the second set to keep momentum on its side against Florida Atlantic. The Wave faced an early deficit in the set until eventually pulling the score to a tie at 19-19. The two team went back and forth at the end of the set, but it was the Green Wave that closed on top 26-24.
In the third set Tulane and Florida Atlantic traded points before reaching a 9-9 tie. The Owls made the next push with an 8-2 scoring run to take control and go on to win the set 25-18.
Tulane bounced back in a big way in the fourth set jumping out to a 9-1 advantage before Florida Atlantic could respond. The lead for the Wave was briefly trimmed to three points, but the Green Wave was not fazed pushing its advantage back to six on its way to a 25-20 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
UP NEXT
The Green Wave will travel to San Antonio, Texas, to square off with UTSA on Sunday, November 9. The match between Tulane and the Roadrunners is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
