Baseball Claims Series Against Cincinnati With Doubleheader Sweep Friday
Mar 29, 2019 | Baseball
The Green Wave (18-8, 1-0 The American) raced out of the gate putting up four in the opening frame of the contest and came back with three more in the second to put some distance between themselves and the Bearcats (9-15, 2-2). It paled in comparison to the nine the squad put up in the top of the fourth, using just three hits in the inning to open the floodgates and cruise to the victory.
10 different Tulane players got hits in the game, with six earning multiple hits led by Jonathon Artigues who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. The top of the lineup in Trevor Jensen, Kody Hoese and Grant Mathews combined for six hits between the three, while Hudson Haskin and Sal Gozzo also added two each.
Frankie Niemann was one of two players to drive in three on the night, as David Bedgood hit his sixth home run of the season on a two-run shot and plated another amid scoring twice for the Green Wave.
Starting pitcher Kaleb Roper (4-2) earned his third consecutive victory on the mound as he limited Cincinnati to four runs, two earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and four walks in 5.2 innings of work. Robert Price (1) picked up his first career save as he pitched the final 3.1 innings as he scattered two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in relief.
Cincinnati used four pitchers in the game, as starter AJ Kullman (0-5) lasted just three innings in allowing nine runs, five earned, on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout. All four Bearcat pitchers gave up runs to Tulane, with the four combining to issue seven walks to batters.
Jace Mercer, Joey Bellini and Eric Santiago combined for six of Cincinnati's 11 hits on the afternoon, with Santiago driving in two.
The game began roughly for the home side as an error at third base allowed Jensen to reach on the opening at-bat of the game. After an out, Mathews singled up the middle as Jensen scored to put Tulane up 1-0. Niemann flew out to right as Mathews came in to score and make it 2-0, with Bedgood clearing the bases with his two-run shot to make it 4-0.
In the second, Artigues was walked to put one on, as Gozzo followed up with a single to left to put a pair on. Jensen smoked a ball to left to score Artigues to make it 5-1 Tulane. With the bases loaded and two outs, Niemann lifted one to left to drive in two and put the Green Wave on top 7-1.
The gates opened in the fourth as a walk and a hit batter ended the day for Kullman, but it wouldn't get better for Cincinnati as three more walks after that brought in two runs to make 9-3 Tulane. After a strikeout, another walk pushed the lead to 10-3, forcing another Cincinnati pitching change.
A grounder to second put two outs on the board but allowed another runner to score to make it a 11-3 ballgame, as Hoese singled to right to bring in two more to extend the lead to 13-3. With the bases still loaded a wild pitch plated another run bringing the score to 14-3, with a fielding error scoring two more to push the lead to double digits at 16-3.
Artigues tripled to right with an out in the top of the ninth, scoring on a wild pitch to make it 17-4 at that point. Collin Burns doubled to right center, as after an out to center, Hoese connected for his 12th home run of the season to make it a 19-4 contest and cap the scoring for both sides.
Game 2: Tulane 8, Cincinnati 1
After producing another strong offensive performance in the first game of the doubleheader, the Tulane baseball team came out hot again at the plate by scoring seven of its runs in the first four innings, including a five-spot in the fourth, to jump out to a lead it would never relinquish it in a 8-1 win over the Bearcats to claim the series.
Just like it had done in the first game, Tulane (19-8, 2-0 The American) scored first and never looked back, plating a pair of runs in the first two innings, using a five-run fourth to aid in the victory.
The Green Wave were led at the plate by Jonathon Artigues who went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Hudson Haskin and Kody Hoese each had doubles among their two hits, while Kobi Owen had a home run and drove in two on the night.
Keagan Gillies (1-1) went six innings and earned his first win by holding Cincinnati to a single run on five hits, striking out six and walking two. The relievers in C.J. Whelan, Trent Johnson, Brendan Cellucci and Connor Pellerin did not give up a hit the rest of the game to help secure the series.
Cincinnati's (9-16, 2-3) Evan Shwaver (1-3) suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits. He struck out five and walked two, as his relief in Nathan Moore and Chase Stewart combined to allow one run on a hit in the final four innings of the game.
The Bearcats got a hit from five different players, with Eric Santiago driving in Cincinnati's only run on a triple in the fourth.
With two outs in the top of the first and a runner at first, Haskin doubled down the left field line and Grant Mathews barreled his way home, beating the throw to put Tulane ahead 1-0. In the second, Owen blasted a solo shot to left to make it a 2-0 game for the Green Wave.
David Bedgood drew a walk to open the Tulane fourth, as Artigues doubled down the line in left to put runners at second and third with one out on the board. Sal Gozzo hit into a fielder's choice to score Bedgood who came in under the throw home to make it 3-0 Tulane. Back-to-back doubles from Trevor Jensen and Hoese brought in three more to extend the lead to 6-0, as a fielding error allowed another to score to make it 7-0.
Bedgood drew a walk with one out in the top of the seventh, advancing to second after a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt and to third on a wild pitch. Owen brought in his second run of the day by grounding out to short to score Bedgood and extend the lead to 8-1.
Tulane will go for the series sweep Sunday at 11 a.m. CT at Marge Schott Field in Cincinnati.
