TULANE GAME NOTES
New Orleans, LA - The Tulane baseball team (21-13, 5-4 AAC) hosts a three-game conference weekend set against UAB (18-15, 3-6 AAC) starting on Friday, April 11, at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Media
All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Boron (pxp) and Joey Brockhoff (color) on the call. The Voice of the Green Wave, Corey Gloor, will call the action for all three games on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH/Varsity Network. Airtime for radio for all three games is 15 minutes before first pitch.
Promotions
Friday is Go Green in which members of the university will be on-hand to talk about sustainable recycling efforts along with Friday Night Bingo. Saturday is Masters Saturday as a Tulane Golf Towel will be given away to the first 250 fans. Sunday is the second Bark in the Park Day of the season where fans are encouraged to bring their dogs. The first 50 fans will also be able to get a collapsible dog bowl. The day is also a Riptide Kids Club Day where all Kids Club members receive free game admission, will be able to run the bases following the game and there will be a giveaway of collectible Tulane Baseball cards plus a postgame autograph session with Boots Landry, Wes Burton, Kross Howarth, Grayson Smith and Blaise Wilcenski.
Pitching Matchups
Tulane is slated to start lefty Luc Fladda in the opener on Friday evening against the Blazers. Fladda has been the team's Friday starter in each of the first eight weekends of the season. He is 1-3 on the campaign with 42 strikeouts in 41.1 innings worked and only five walks. The 6-1 lefthander went 5-3 last year in his first season as a member of the Green Wave, sporting an earned run average of 4.77 with 61 strikeouts and 21 walks in 83 innings.
On Saturday, in the second game of the series, Tulane starts 6-8 righty Trey Cehajic. Cehajic is 4-1 on the year with a 4.45 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched. He worked as the team's Sunday starter in each of the first two weekends but has been the regular Saturday hurler weekly since then. His best start of the season came against North Dakota State as he worked a career-high six innings against the Bison in limiting them to two runs. Cehajic hails from Shreveport, Louisiana and is in his second year with the program. As a junior he worked exclusively out of the bullpen in his 19 appearances. He placed second on the team with four saves while totaling 15 strikeouts in 27.1 innings thrown and a 0-2 record.
The Sunday starter for Tulane is to be determined at this point depending on the results and bullpen usage in the two earlier games of the series.
The Blazers will counter with Chase Ingram on Friday and Colin Daniel on Saturday. Ingram is 2-2 on the year with one complete game, and 30 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched. Â Daniel has a mark of 3-3 this season with 40 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitched. The expected starter on Sunday for UAB has yet to be announced.
Scouting UAB
UAB (18-15, 3-6 AAC) have lost three of the team's last four games after falling in the midweek to Mississippi State and losing the home conference series to UTSA last weekend. The team does have a pair of marque wins on the ledger this season over then No. 16 Auburn (4/1) and then No. 22 Auburn (3/5). Logan Braunschweig has been the top player for the Blazers with his .361 batting average, 31 runs, 44 hits, nine doubles, five home runs, 21 RBIs, 24 walks and 18 stolen bases. Todd Clay leads the club in RBIs with 33 to go along with his 30 hits and nine doubles. The top power source has been Camden Hayslip. Hayslip leads the team with six home runs. The Blazers have used a pair of closers this season in Ryan Olson and Brendan Conner. Olson is 2-1 with five saves plus 22 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched. Connor is 1-1 with four saves. The head coach of the squad is Casey Dunn. Dunn is in his fourth season with the program and is 92-106 leading the Blazers.
Series History
The Green Wave and the Blazers have been playing against each other since 1996. Tulane leads the all-time series 42-23. UAB took the series last season in Birmingham with victories in game one (6-2) and game three (7-6). Tulane won the middle game 14-13. The matchup last year with the Blazers was the first for the program since 2014. Tulane won the first 14 games of the series but are only 2-7 in the last nine games with UAB.
Last Time Out
The Tulane baseball team (21-13, 5-4 AAC) saw the program's four game winning streak stopped in a 7-3 loss to state rival Southeastern Louisiana (26-7) on Tuesday night, April 8, on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings only to see the Lions roar back with three in the third, two more in the fifth, a run in the seven and a tally in the ninth.
The Lions outhit the Green Wave 10-8 and also drew nine walks compared to three for Tulane.
John-Paul Sauer earned the start for Tulane and went the first two innings with two runs, two walks and three strikeouts. He was the first of what would be end up being nine pitchers used by the club on the day. Wes Burton (0-2) was the first arm out of the pen and was tagged with the loss as he surrendered three runs in 2.2 innings with four strikeouts along with two hits and walk. Garrett Payne then entered the game and went an inning with three hits allowed and a strikeout. Julius Ejike-Charles was the team's fourth pitcher and recorded an out along with allowing a walk and a run. Gavin Smith was called upon next, and he threw a 0.1 of an inning. That led to a Jacob Moore relief appearance. He allowed a run in 0.2 innings pitched with a walk and a strikeout. Grayson Smith had a scoreless frame as the team's seventh pitcher of the night. Henry Shuffler threw 0.1 frames with two hits and a run allowed along two walks and a strikeout. Michael Devenney was the program's ninth and final pitcher with a scoreless 0.2 in the ninth.
Gavin Schulz led the offensive attack for Tulane with a pair of hits. Matthias Haas, Connor Rasmussen, Hugh Pinkney, Andrew McKenna, Brock Slaton and Kaikea Harrison all had a hit. The team's runs were scored by Haas, Rasmussen and Slaton.
Two Honored by the AAC – Week Eight
Junior Michael Lombardi was named to the AAC's Pitcher of the Week and junior Hugh Pinkney was selected to the Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced on April 7.
Lombardi played a direct role in three of the team's four wins on the week on the mound with two wins and a save in three appearances that covered 4.0 innings. He struck out nine while limiting opponents to a .200 batting average. He also had four hits, three doubles and an RBI as a hitter. He started his week picking up a pair of wins against No. 13 Southern Miss (4/1). He then started the contest against Northwestern State (4/2) where he went the first two hitless innings in a pitch-limit start with four strikeouts. He came in relief in the series opener against Rice (4/4) where struck out two to earn his eighth save of the season. He had two hits, two runs scored, an RBI and double in the second game of the series against Rice (4/5). Lombardi reached base safely with a walk in the series finale against Rice (4/5) and also came in relief and threw a scoreless inning with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the week and on the season.
Pinkney led the offensive attack for Tulane on the 4-1 week with his .389 batting average, six runs, seven hits, a double, a home run, eight RBIs, 11 total bases, a .611 slugging percentage, three walks, a hit by pitch and an on-base percentage of .500. He reached base safely in all five games. Pinkney had a career-high three hits plus an RBI against No. 13 Southern Miss (4/1) in the team's first game against a ranked opponent. He produced a three-run double and walked in the victory over Northwestern State (4/2). Pinkney hit a grand slam and walked twice with two runs scored in the series opening game against conference rival Rice (4/4). He had a pair of hits and runs scored in the second game against the Owls (4/5). Pinkney completed his week by getting hit by a pitch in the series finale of the doubleheader against Rice (4/5).
This is the fourth weekly honor that Lombardi has earned and the first for Pinkney this season. Overall, the program has been recognized by the conference seven times on the campaign.
Notables from the Southeastern Louisiana Midweek – 4/8
The start on the mound by John-Paul Sauer was the first for him and for Tulane by a true freshman since the 2023 AAC Conference Tournament. Tulane recorded 11 strikeouts on the day for the program's 18th game in double figures in strikeouts this season (three more than all of last season in 62 games) in 34 games. The two-hit game was the ninth of the season for Gavin Schulz. The loss to Southeastern Louisiana dropped the program to 82-42 all-time against the Lions and 307-165 against current schools in the Southland Conference. The game was the seventh of 10 against Southland Conference opponents this season.
Next
Following the home weekend series against UAB, Tulane plays against UNO (16-15) in the second game of the Pelican Cup at home on Tuesday, April 15, at 6:30 p.m. The game is makeup contest from one that was originally scheduled for February 18 before it was postponed due to inclement weather. Following the UNO contest, Tulane will play the team's next seven games on the road starting with a Thursday matchup, April 17, in San Antonio with UTSA (25-9, 7-2 AAC) at 6 p.m. in the first contest of a three-game conference set.
